Evidences of Young Earth and Universe

Here are some arguments for believing that the universe is relatively young, and not billions of years old, as many people wish to believe.

It is unrealistic to believe it took Lucifer billions of years to invent sin, or that God would wait that long to deal with it. As for the speed of light argument—many fail to realize that when matter and energy were being created, time and space were also being created—so the first moments of the universe could have seen light traveling at nearly infinite speed. God's first command in creation was "Let there be light." He did not want His creatures to live in a dark universe, having to wait billions or even millions of years to behold the glory of His creation. If the universe is actually billions of years old, then why is it that we cannot aim our telescopes at some dark region of the sky, and see stars slowly appear there, as light from the most distant stellar objects is just now reaching us? No matter how powerful we make our telescopes, no matter that we orbit them in space so there is no atmosphere to impede the view, wherever we aim our telescopes, light from the most distant stellar objects is already reaching us. When God said, "Let there be light," He made it be so. This is a solid evidentiary test that falsifies the idea of a vastly old universe. The universe cannot be billions of years old, if we do not still receive new light from distant stars or galaxies, just now arriving.

There is other solid, physical confirmation that the universe is relatively young. All planetary nebula that are clearly the result of an explosion from a central point, have been expanding at most for no more than 12,000 years, according to direct observation. We can measure how far the stellar clouds have spread from the central point of origin, and in all cases, expansion has been going on for no more than 12,000 years, even allowing for expansion near the speed of light. Hence the universe itself cannot be any older than that.

Near-sun passing comets should have evaporated away in little over 12,000 years, according to the scientific principles of measurable rates of evaporation as they near the sun, and how long they are observed to take in their orbits. Yet they still exist! Astrophysicists influenced by evolution and wanting to believe in a vast age for the universe, have recognized the logical problem this causes for them, so in an attempt to explain things, they have hypothesized the existence of an "Oort Cloud" of cometary bodies maybe half a light year from our sun, that is frequently disrupted by large masses passing through it from time to time which sends some comets inward to replenish the near-sun passing comets.

But there has been no confirmation whatsoever that the Oort Cloud exists or that there are massive bodies that frequently pass through the area on the fringes of our solar system. The rings of Saturn are believed to be inherently unstable, according to recognized principles of engineering and planetary dynamics, and could not persist for more than 12,000 years. Some of the other gas giants in our solar system (such as Neptune and Uranus) also have rings, but they are smaller and fainter, almost gone, which is why they have only recently been discovered. Creationist Scientists such as Dr. Russell Humphreys have documented many more solid, scientific evidences that prove the earth and the universe have to be relatively young, in the neighborhood of thousands of years, not billions. Realizing the relative youth of the universe leads to the conclusion that God may have only just begun populating worlds with intelligent beings. The 24 elders mentioned in Revelation 4, 5, 11, 19, may be patriarchs from the only worlds besides earth that have been populated. Some people have theorized that the 24 elders might represent those who were specially resurrected at the same time that Jesus was crucified and resurrected. But this is contradicted by the fact that the song they sing in Revelation 5:9, 10 is also sung by the “four creatures” (or “beasts” in the KJV) who surround God’s throne (perhaps as pilots—the throne of God flies), and they explicitly are declared to be non-human. God must have interrupted His initial work of creation to deal with the problem of sin. But when the sin problem has been finally dealt with, after all the events of Revelation have concluded, then perhaps God will resume His work of populating worlds with intelligent life.

If so, then we humans who have been redeemed from earth may be privileged to share with God in this work. Jesus promised us: "He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne." (Revelation 3:21) We will have an important part to play, in giving our witness of what sin and redemption were like, to each new race that is created. Thus the Redeemed of earth will enjoy an eternal mission: guaranteeing the continued security of the universe, making sure sin never arises again.

If we have any inkling of how vastly large the universe is, how many worlds must exist, then we can only conclude that this work of continued creation, populating all the worlds of space, could take virtually forever. So we will never run out of things to do in eternity, never come to an end of the need to repeat the story of our salvation experience that glorifies God by testifying of our personal knowledge of God’s incredible self-sacrificing love, that proves He is worthy of our endless reverence and devotion to following His example.

Scientific Evidences that Confirm a Young Earth

Very Little Sediment on the Seafloor If sediments have been accumulating on the seafloor for three billion years, the seafloor should be choked with sediments many miles deep.

Bent Rock Layers In many mountainous areas, rock layers thousands of feet thick have been bent and folded without fracturing. How can that happen if they were laid down separately over hundreds of millions of years and already hardened?

Soft Tissue in Fossils If dinosaurs lived over 65 million years ago, why do some dinosaur fossils still contain well-preserved soft tissues? Bone slices from the fossilized thigh bone (femur) of a Tyrannosaurus rex found in the Hell Creek formation of Montana were studied under the microscope by Dr. Mary Schweitzer. To her amazement, the bone showed what appeared to be blood vessels of the type seen in bone and marrow, and these contained what appeared to be red blood cells with nuclei, typical of reptiles and birds (but not mammals). The vessels even appeared to be lined with specialized endothelial cells found in all blood vessels.

Amazingly, the bone marrow contained what appeared to be flexible tissue. Initially, some skeptical scientists suggested that bacterial biofilms (dead bacteria aggregated in a slime) formed what only appear to be blood vessels and bone cells. Recently Schweitzer and coworkers found biochemical evidence for intact fragments of the protein collagen, which is the building block of connective tissue. This is important because collagen is a highly distinctive protein not made by bacteria. Faint Sun Paradox Evidence now supports astronomers’ belief that the sun’s power comes from the fusion of hydrogen into helium deep in the sun’s core, but there is a huge problem. As the hydrogen fuses, it should change the composition of the sun’s core, gradually increasing the sun’s temperature. If true, this means that the earth was colder in the past. In fact, the earth would have been below freezing 3.5 billion years ago, when life supposedly evolved.

Rapidly Decaying Magnetic Field The earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that protects living things from solar radiation. Without it, life could not exist. That’s why scientists were surprised to discover that the field is quickly wearing down. At the current rate, the field and thus the earth could be no older than 20,000 years old.

Helium in Radioactive Rocks During the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium contained in rocks, lots of helium is produced. Because helium is the second lightest element and a noble gas—meaning it does not combine with other atoms—it readily diffuses (leaks) out and eventually escapes into the atmosphere. Helium diffuses so rapidly that all the helium should have leaked out in less than 100,000 years. So why are these rocks still full of helium atoms?

While drilling deep Precambrian (pre-Flood) granitic rocks in New Mexico, geologists extracted samples of zircon (zirconium silicate) crystals from different depths. The crystals contained not only uranium but also large amounts of helium.…Up to 58% of the helium that the uranium could have ever generated was still present in the crystals.

Carbon-14 in Fossils, Coal, and Diamonds Carbon-14 (or radiocarbon) is a radioactive form of carbon that scientists use to date fossils. But it decays so quickly—with a half-life of only 5,730 years—that none is expected to remain in fossils after only a few hundred thousand years. Yet carbon-14 has been detected in “ancient” fossils—supposedly up to hundreds of millions of years old—ever since the earliest days of radiocarbon dating.

Even if every atom in the whole earth were carbon-14, they would decay so quickly that no carbon-14 would be left on earth after only 1 million years. Contrary to expectations, between 1984 and 1998 alone, the scientific literature reported carbon-14 in 70 samples that came from fossils, coal, oil, natural gas, and marble representing the fossil-bearing portion of the geologic record, supposedly spanning more than 500 million years. All contained radiocarbon. Further, analyses of fossilized wood and coal samples, supposedly spanning 32–350 million years in age, yielded ages between 20,000 and 50,000 years using carbon-14 dating. Diamonds supposedly 1–3 billion years old similarly yielded carbon-14 ages of only 55,000 years.

Very Little Salt in the Sea If the world’s oceans have been around for three billion years as evolutionists believe, they should be filled with vastly more salt than the oceans contain today.

Every year rivers, glaciers, underground seepage, and atmospheric and volcanic dust dump large amounts of salts into the oceans. Consider the influx of the predominant salt, sodium chloride (common table salt). Some 458 million tons of sodium mix in with ocean water each year, but only 122 million tons (27%) are removed by other natural processes.

DNA in “Ancient” Bacteria In the year 2000 A.D., scientists claimed to have “resurrected” bacteria, named Lazarus bacteria, discovered in a salt crystal conventionally dated at 250 million years old. They were shocked that the bacteria’s DNA was very similar to modern bacterial DNA. If the modern bacteria were the result of 250 million years of evolution, its DNA should be very different from the Lazarus bacteria (based on known mutation rates).

In addition, the scientists were surprised to find that the DNA was still intact after the supposed 250 million years. DNA normally breaks down quickly, even in ideal conditions. Even evolutionists agree that DNA in bacterial spores (a dormant state) should not last more than a million years. Their quandary is quite substantial.

However, the discovery of Lazarus bacteria is not shocking or surprising when we base our expectations on the Bible accounts. For instance, Noah’s Flood likely deposited the salt beds that were home to the bacteria. If the Lazarus bacteria are only about 4,500 years old (the approximate number of years that have passed since the worldwide flood), their DNA is more likely to be intact and similar to modern bacteria.

Here is an additional argument in favor of Creation as a truly scientific explanation for the existence of life on earth.

In the genetic code of every living creature on earth, scientists have identified large sections of code that do not appear to be directly connected to the present forms of these creatures. Some scientists try to explain these sections of code as mere nonsense code. They describe genetic characteristics that are “turned off” by what has been identified as on-off switches, causing the section of code to be skipped over when the code is being read by biological processes.

Some scientists claim these sections of unused code are evidence of evolution in action. However, this ignores a basic principle of evolution theory: In order for a genetic characteristic to be changed, it must be expressed. If a whole section of code is simply turned off, then it cannot be modified, or influenced in any way by whether the code is useful or not. There can be no evolution without the code first being expressed.

Creation theory explains these sections of unused code in a much better way. They represent a library of alternate characteristics that can be selected for according to the design of the Creator, making provision for alternate environmental conditions that might arise.

Now, we can test which of these theories is right and which is wrong. If evolution is right, then new useful characteristics are being written into the genes all the time. This goes against the logical argument that genetic characteristics that are not expressed cannot be selected for or against. So no lengthy code that means anything useful could possibly be written.

But Creation postulates that God wrote all the codes, including the parts that are currently not expressed, and are normally skipped over. It is only necessary for an on-off switch to be flipped, so that a whole section of already prepared code can be activated all at once. This is how one species can give rise to another similar species—such as how a wolf can become a collie or bulldog or a cocker spaniel. A wolf cannot ever become a cat; the coding is not present in the genes of a wolf.

The final, conclusive test will be possible when the science of gene-mapping advances to the point where it is possible to identify which sections of genetic code give rise to new alternate sub species. In other words, when we can point to the genetic code for a collie being present in the genetic code for a wolf, that will prove that the collie is already present in the wolf. One did not evolve into the other, all were already present together, created at once by the Creator. This would conclusively prove Creation and disprove evolution. The likelihood of this is already demonstrated by the proven success of genetic breeding.

THEOLOGICAL ARGUMENTS FOR A YOUNG EARTH, UNIVERSE

There are indeed many good, verifiable scientific evidences for a relatively young earth and universe. But I would also offer a theological argument, that should be seriously considered by those who believe the Bible:

God declared in Isaiah 46:9, 10, “I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning.”

So then from the very beginning, at the creation of the universe, God knew that when He created creatures capable of love—which in turn requires free will—there would eventually arise some who would choose to doubt Him and turn against Him, and invent the thing called “sin.”

So then, would God have waited billions of years before dealing with the problem of sin? Would He have waited that long before finally making sure of the eternal security of the universe? Let us note that in Isaiah 14:12, Lucifer, the angel who invented sin, is called “Son of the Morning.” According to Strong’s Concordance, “Lucifer” means: “shining one, light-bearer.” This implies that Lucifer was the first angel that God created! From that we see that God purposed to be proactive, and deal with the problem of sin as soon as possible. He is not the kind of God who would have created the universe billions of years ago, and only now be getting around to dealing with the problem of sin.

Many people misinterpret what is said in Genesis 1:16. The phrase at the end of Genesis 1:16—“He made the stars also”—is a parenthetical expression, to let anyone who might question know that the same God who made the greater and lesser lights also created the stars, and it was not done by some other deity. It does not mean God created the stars on the fourth day of Creation Week on earth. In fact, the author of Hebrews stated that the Heavenly temple, after which the earthly temple was fashioned as a symbolic representation, was “not of this creation.” The King James Version says, “building,” instead of creation, but virtually all other translations say “creation.” The Greek word ktisis, is most commonly translated as “creation.” In other words, Heaven, and God’s temple in it, were created before living things on earth were created.

The rest of the universe is probably only about twice as old as life on earth. You see, God did not wait that long after the initial creation of the universe, before He created Lucifer, and in process of time Lucifer conceived of sin and gave himself wholly to it, and became Satan, the Enemy. Some might even say that God’s work of Creation will not be completed until the whole universe is rendered eternally secure, with sin disposed of, in such a way that sin will never arise again. And that is where we of earth and Adam’s race (Jesus’ race) come in.
